dalian shipbuilding industry engineering & research institute co., ltd.( hereinafter called ”dsic design institute”), founded in may 4, 1966, over 50 year’s diligence and striving, has not only developed into the most powerful ship and offshore engineering design and research institution affiliated to chinese existing shipyards, but also won an important place among the specialized domestic institutions even in the same industry. since her founding, she has developed and designed more than 3000 vessels, offshore engineering and heavy industrial products of 400 types for domestic and oversea ship owners successively, creating more than 70 no.1s(initial) domestically, who has made great contributions to the development of china shipbuilding industry.
long history: set up the 1st design & research institute within a shipbuilding enterprise in china
as a r&d center of dsic in new products, new technology and new workmanship, dsic design institute, powerful in technical forces, ranking in the national enterprise technology center, and rated as defense-related science and technology innovation team, is mainly involved in r&d and design of military projects, merchant vessels, offshore engineering, heavy industry and ship repair and demolition as well as scientific research projects issued by relevant state ministries and commissions and r&d works for defense-related scientific research trial-produce projects. in accordance with iso9001 quality management system, the authentication certificates issued by dnv and china new time quality system certification center have been acquired, capable of developing and designing various types of vessels and offshore engineering products to meet the rules and regulations of class societies, such as ccs, lr, dnv, abs, bv, nk and rina as well as various international conventions and standards.

rely on strong comprehensive strength of dsic, dsic design institute has always pioneered her way and achieved great achievements one after another in five major sectors of military project, merchant vessel, offshore engineering, ship repair & demolition and heavy industry. among the china top ten famous vessels appraised in 2006, there were three ones designed by dsic design institute.
military project sector- to have provided the powerful technical safeguard for successful construction of more than 820 ships in 45 types for china navy successively, where the first gunboat, the first guided missile submarine and the first water-and-oil replenishment vessel in china were born in dsic. the construction and delivery of the first china aircraft carrier “liaoning” of world attention has realized the dream of compatriots pine for aircraft carrier over a century, for which dsic design team have devoted their great efforts to the work as a permanent pride for dsic design institute.
merchant ship sector- to have independently developed and designed 15000 dwt oil tanker of the largest domestic tonnage in 1960s; to have independently developed and designed 12000dwt ocean-going open hatch cargo ship,24000dwt oil tanker and 50000dwt oil tanker in1970s; to have developed and designed the first china export ship- 27000 dwt bulk carrier “great wall” constructed in accordance with the international standards, rules and regulations, 38000dwt and 80000dwt product/crude oil carriers, 115000dwt and 118000dwt shuttle tankers in 1980s; with the progress from introduction and absorption to secondary innovation and original development, ever since 1990s, dsic design institute has mainly focused on three major shiptypes of bulk carrier, container ship and liquid cargo carrier, and continually strengthened scientific and technical development and innovation so as to grow the capability of independent innovation rapidly- there are many types of significant new products entering into the domestic and international markets successively, such as fantasy-type 28000dwt multi-purpose container ship, 76000 dwt product carrier, dalian-type 110000 dwt product carrier, africa-max 3900teu container vessel, 5668teu container vessel, 10000teu container vessel, 20000teu container vessel, large roro ship, large chemical carrier and independently developed vlcc of many types, etc., whose technology is leading domestically and advanced internationally.
offshore engineering sector: from the first 40m jackup in 1970s, the first export drilling platform in 1980s, the first bingo 9000 semi-submersible drilling platform in 1990s last century, to the first 150000dwt fpso, the first 230000dwt fpso, the first 400-foot jackup, the first 3000m deep water semi-submersible drilling platform, the first multi-functional semi-submersible drilling support platform and the first 300-foot jackup with a fully independent intellectual right this century. keeping developing the new through the old abreast with the times, dsic design institute has worked out nearly 70 offshore engineering products in various types for years, which have filled many domestic gaps and created many domestic no.1s.
heavy industry sector- dsic design institute has broken through the international monopoly of single point mooring to accomplish independent research and development of catenary single point mooring system, which has enabled dsic to be the first domestic prime contractor for single point mooring system; through technical innovation, provide shipping companies with r&d and design of hydrodynamic energy-saving device for operating vessels so as to substantially upgrade the operating energy efficiency for clients’ fleets; the hatch cover of 3900teu container vessel with an independent intellectual right has acquired approval from lr and ship owners, which has broken the monopolistic status of foreign design houses in the market of container vessel and bulk carrier hatch cover designs. overcome technical barrier of high-efficiency twisted rudder and get hold of design philosophy and method on such rudder, which has filled the domestic gaps for independent design of high-efficiency rudder and opened up the brand new market for heavy industrial equipment.
ship repair and demolition sector- dsic design institute has completed the conversion designs for haiyang shiyou 113, fpso, 9250teu container vessel and 12600teu container vessel successively, which has attracted the world attention. based on the advanced green ship demolition technology and hardware facility, dsic shall guide the green transformation trend in the international ship demolition industry.
dedicating to r&d: seize the market cutting edge to guide customer demand
r&d capability is a benchmarking to measure the strength of a ship design and research institution. dsic design institute has built up specialized technical teams for merchant ship, offshore engineering and heavy industry meticulously, with about 150 employees specialized in research and development, among which there are one academician of the chinese academy of engineering, three china shipbuilding design masters, more than 100 doctors and post graduates. over the years, dsic design institute has constantly increased fund and manpower input in research and development according to the r&d philosophy of “develop one generation, build one generation and reserve one generation”, adopting a strategy of “going out and inviting in” and integrating the industry-university-research cooperation so as to keep boosting her independent r&d capability, where she has become one of the most powerful units on r&d capability in the same industry to take a domestic lead, with a leap to the product development with independent intellectual right from only the production design at very beginning. she has not only bagged plentiful orders for dsic at the golden age of shipbuilding industry, but also been able to guide customer demand to seize valuable orders under the existing austere industrial downturn.
among which, the most classical 300000dwt-class vlcc, with continual upgrade and optimization to build dsic’s own brand shiptype, has become a self-owned brand marketing on a large scale, which has increasingly secured favors from ship owners, with more than 80 orders bagged in total, occupying 10% of global vlcc fleet, well known as dsic’s “vlcc fleet” worldwide. above 10000teu-class container vessel series have been industrialized, where the first 10000teu container vessel with fully independent development, design and construction has not only realized a new leap to construct the ultra large container vessel (ulcv) domestically, but enabled china to one of the earliest countries in building ulcv with independent development, design and construction following korea and japan. the eedi of the newly developed 113000dwt product carrier is approximately 30% lower than the baseline value, whose overall performance has taken a domestic lead. in the new round of developing “green ships”, high-tech vessels, such as vlcc with less/no ballast water, and large lng carrier, etc., have been worked out successively, whose technical conditions are ready for undertaking actual ships.
in the meantime, offshore engineering products have realized a leap to independent r&d and design from technical introduction. up to now, dsic design institute has become a domestic offshore engineering r&d institution with the widest product variety, richest experience and maximum finished products while being the first domestic research institution with an independent intellectual right of jackup. she has had independent r&d capability of fpso, and designed and manufactured many products. the detail design and whole production design for jackups represented by ju2000e has been completed successfully. dsj300/350/400 jackup series have been worked out independently and brought to market successfully to fill the domestic gaps.

scientific and technological innovation is the primary productive force. for 50 years since her founding, dsic design institute has always adhered to technological innovation as her duty to meet the development of shipping and energy industry in the new times, and dedicated to driving upgrade and replacement of ships and offshore engineering products, for which more than 330 scientific and technological achievements and awards in various types have been awarded, among which, there are close to 70 national-level awards and more than 260 provincial- and ministerial- level ones. also, 280 items of patent technology and more than 30 software 凯发平台 copyrights have been acquired while drawing up close to 130 national and industrial standards.
at the 2015 shanghai international maritime conference, there are 4 types of products such as new-type lng fueled vlcc, dsj500 jackup developed by dsic design institute ,and combustion turbine engine（coges 2.0）driven 175000m³lng carrier co-worked with ge, certified by dnv gl, abs and lr respectively, which has focused on reflecting her first class innovation capability. only in 2015, there were 130 patents, more than 10 science and technology progress awards acquired, china patent award first awarded and 10 civil projects approved for commencement.
the workmanship and design level of dsic design institute is leading domestically and advanced internationally. there have awarded many domestic no.1s in specialized technological design and research , and overcome many technical difficulties with regard to construction in the domestic shipbuilding industry, for example, earliest adoption of 3-d design, cancellation of 1:1 lofting, large semi-submersible drilling platform launched by slipping from the slipway, cantilever platform installation by integral slippage, leg lengthening technology, large semi-submersible drilling platform welding technology, large container vessel launching technology from the slipway, and vlcc in-dock floating and erecting technology of 2 half-blocks, all taking a domestic lead.
